Just south of Pittsburgh, Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania has been ranked as one of the very best suburbs to raise a family in the metropolitan area by the real estate website Niche. An early proponent of democracy and religious freedom, English entrepreneur and pioneer William Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania in the late 1600’s. Penn converted to Quakerism early on in life and was a fierce defender of his faith, even to the point of being jailed in the Tower of London for those convictions. Penn believed strongly that Quakerism was the only true Christian religion, calling the Catholic Church the “Whore of Babylon” and referring to Puritans as “hypocrites and revelers in God.” When the Anglican Church began persecuting Quakers, Penn proposed to King Charles II that the Quakers be allowed to emigrate to North America. Penn secured land in what is now New Jersey but soon pushed further west, purchasing land from the Lenape Native Americans in 1682. Not long after that he founded the city of Philadelphia on the Delaware River. In the 18th century more and more settlers flooded into Pennsylvania pushing ever westward. Around the time of the American Revolution a combination of English, German, Irish and Scots moved west to what is now Mt. Lebanon after purchasing the land from the family of William Penn.

In the 1790’s, farmers in the area rebelled against a federal tax on whiskey, an important commodity on the western frontier at that time. Known as the Whiskey Rebellion, it took 11,000 government troops to quell the uprising in western Pennsylvania. In 1850 a local minister visited the Holy Land, bringing back two Cedar trees from the mountains of Lebanon which he planted in front of his house. The tree has biblical significance as being part of the wood used to build the sacred Jewish Temple of Jerusalem. The name Mt. Lebanon appealed to residents at the time so the township took the name as its own. While a small farming community for many decades, better and faster transportation, particularly streetcars, turned Mt. Lebanon into a bustling commuter town feeding the work force in Pittsburgh. As recently as 2016, Mt. Lebanon topped Niche’s list of the best suburbs for families in the Pittsburgh region. It places Mt. Lebanon’s median home value at $225,000, well above the national average, and median income exceeding $80,000 a year with over 30% of the town’s residents holding a Master’s Degree or better.

Bird Park, Twin Hills Trails Park and McNeilly Park offer nature and hiking trails. Mt. Lebanon Golf Course features a nine-hole configuration with driving range. Parks are maintained by the Mt. Lebanon Parks and Recreation Department.
