Twenty miles north of the Ohio River along Brush Creek, Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania is considered one of the best suburbs for families in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area by the real estate website Niche. While there is no evidence of permanent settlement, Native American tribes such as the Lenni Lenape, Shawnee and Iroquois used the area which is now Cranberry Township for hunting and fishing. Native Americans made good use of the cranberries they found growing along the bank of Brush Creek. They mashed the cranberries in with dried deer meat to form patties they called pemmican. They also used the cranberry juice as a dye. Not surprisingly, the area came to be named after the sweet red berries. Unfortunately, by the late 19th century the cranberries were gone, victims of drought and increased farming. In 1753 future founding father George Washington was sent through the area along the Venango Trail (a native hunting path) to the French Fort LoBouef to order the French to get out of western Pennsylvania. The French refusal set off the French and Indian War between 1754 and 1763. The British were ultimately victorious with several of America’s future revolutionary heroes receiving important military training during the conflict which solidified British control of Colonial America. While Cranberry Township is described as a suburb of Pittsburgh, it is also a prominent economic and employment destination in northwest Pennsylvania. Real estate website Niche ranks Cranberry Township as the 12th best Pittsburgh suburb for families with an overall grade of A+ and median household incomes exceeding $100,000 a year.

In October, the museum comes alive (pun intended) for the annual “Living Dead Weekend” which draws fans from all over western Pennsylvania for a chance to rub elbows with “Dead” stars such as Joe Pilato and Lori Cardille and visit original film locations.

Local sports fans have several chances to see live action with professional teams representing the NFL, NHL and MLB. The ever-popular Steelers, winners of six world championships, play on the banks of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers at Heinz Field. Next door, Major League Baseball’s Pirates compete in PNC Park. The reigning National Hockey League champions Pittsburgh Penguins skate at PPG Paints Arena across the river from the Steelers and Pirates.
