About Lake Shore
About twenty miles from Baltimore along the Magothy River, Lake Shore, Maryland is a small community in Anne Arundel County. The area which is now Lake Shore was certainly spotted by Captain John Smith on his second voyage into Chesapeake Bay in 1608. Along the bay he encountered Native American tribes, some who attacked the Englishmen and some who were peaceful and content to trade goods. It wouldn’t be long until more English settlers came to the land and set up permanent towns and villages. Although they never set foot in North America, Cecil Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore, and his wife Anne Arundel had a lasting effect on the state and the area around Lake Shore. In 1632 Calvert negotiated a charter with King Charles I for the colony of Maryland. Calvert named the territory after Charles’s Catholic wife Henrietta Maria. Calvert’s brother Leonard was named the colony’s governor and the next year he captained two ships, the Ark and the Dove across the Atlantic with 300 settlers, mostly Catholics fleeing persecution in England, who would be the first European inhabitants of Maryland. In 1644 Calvert was forced out of Maryland by Protestants but returned two years later to take back his claim as governor of the colony. Calvert died just three years later and although his grave was never marked the state erected an obelisk in his honor at St. Mary’s City in southern Maryland. The city of Baltimore, of course, took the name of Cecil Calvert and Anne Arundel County was named after his wife. Today, Lake Shore is considered a suburb of Baltimore and is often linked with Pasadena, Maryland on its western edge.
It’s certain that a Lake Shore tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take a break to enjoy the many attractions and amenities in the greater Baltimore region. On the shores of Chesapeake Bay, John H. Downs Memorial Park in Pasadena offers 236 acres with a variety of recreational activities. The park features a fishing pier, children’s playgrounds, a dog park and exceptional views of the bay. There are also over five miles of paved and dirt pathways for hiking and biking. One of Maryland’s finest public golf courses, Compass Point, is just north of Lake Shore. With two 18-hole courses, Compass Point is a primary destination for golfers as well as an outstanding setting for weddings, special events and corporate outings.
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor just up the coast from Lake Shore is a destination fit for residents and tourists alike. It offers museums, cultural centers, restaurants and exciting night life. The National Aquarium on the harbor features several exhibits including the multi-story Atlantic Coral Reef, Tropical Rain Forest and Australia: Wild Extremes. The aquarium, opened in 1981, houses several types of sharks, bottlenose dolphins and a multitude of freshwater and ocean species such as clownfish, triggerfish and jellyfish. It’s also home to animals such as birds, flying foxes, turtles, snakes and various amphibians.
Harbor museums cater to all ages with the Port Discovery Children’s Museum serving more than 2.5 million visitors each year. Highlighted exhibits attempt to provide kids with informative and interactive experiences. “Adventure Expeditions” takes participants back to Egypt in the 1920’s where they have to decipher hieroglyphics to discover the location of the pharaoh’s lost tomb. Other exhibits include “The Oasis,” “Kick It Up” and “Tot’s Trail.”
