Pontiac grew due to its central location, which also benefitted from the proximity of the Clinton River. Many nearby cities and townships did not have this ready water supply and therefore did not grow or advance as fast. Initially, as with most neighborhoods nearby, the land use was primarily agricultural. The location of the river was advantageous for farming and grooming livestock. The river location was also useful for generating power for those whose living was made from wool or flour mills, as the river generated power for these mills to run more efficiently.

Advancements in industry changed the city of Pontiac for good with the arrival of the motorcar. No doubt if you had heard the name Pontiac before it was due to it being the name of the famous GM car (produced up until 2009).
