About Inkster

Due west from downtown Detroit, Inkster, Michigan is a suburb in Wayne County. For centuries before the first French fur trappers ventured into the Great Lakes Region in the 17th century, Native American tribes of the area blazed numerous trails through the heavily wooded wilderness around Detroit. After the American Revolution and decisive conflicts with natives which pushed them west and south, Americans began trickling into the region, draining the heavy swampland to make way for agriculture and the lumber industry. Two events coincided to increase migration into southeastern Michigan. First, the Erie Canal was constructed in 1825 making it easier to make the trip west from New England and Pennsylvania. Second, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 displacing Native Americans to territory west of the Mississippi River. Because of these two occurrences American settlers found Michigan, especially the Detroit area, attractive for settlement and farming. One of the first settlers in the area which would become Inkster was Scottish born Robert Inkster who established a steam powered sawmill in the 1850’s. The small village ultimately adopted the name Inkster in 1863. For the rest of the 1800’s and early 1900’s Inkster remained a rural agriculture community. This changed in the 1920’s when Inkster became an enclave for African-American workers employed at Ford’s River Rouge automobile plant in nearby Dearborn. Unfortunately, blacks were prevented from living in the city of Dearborn and many didn’t want to commute all the way from Detroit. Today, Inkster is one of the few Detroit suburbs with an African-American majority.

The museum is also home to Thomas Edison’s laboratory, the Wright Brothers bicycle shop and several automobile exhibits chronicling the history of Henry Ford’s plants in Michigan. The museum and institute have more than 1.5 million visitors each year.

Inkster benefits from its proximity to downtown Detroit. It’s only about a 40-minute drive to the Detroit Institute of Arts which features one of the most important art collections in the United States with pieces by iconic American masters like Alexander Calder, Georgia O’Keefe and Mary Cassatt. European masterpieces housed at the institute are highlighted by Rembrandt’s The Visitation, Van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Straw Hat and Picasso’s Melancholy Woman.

For sports fans, Detroit is home to one of Major League Baseball’s oldest teams, the Tigers, who have played in various ballparks since 1901. Currently they play in Comerica Park which replaced historic Tiger Stadium in 2000. The Tigers have won the World Series four times, most recently in 1984. Right next door to the Tigers, the Detroit Lions of the National Football League play in Ford Field. Established in 1930, the Lions have won four championships. The Red Wings of the National Hockey League and the Pistons of the National Basketball League are also widely popular in Detroit.
