    About Frenchtown

Along the banks of Lake Erie, Frenchtown Charter Township, Michigan is about 45 minutes south of Detroit and 25 miles north of Toledo, Ohio. Originally inhabited by the Potawatomi tribe of Native Americans, Frenchtown took its name from French Canadians who began coming to southeastern Michigan in the second half of the 18th century. These Frenchmen were lured south by the abundance of fur trapping in the Great Lakes. Many of these trappers married Native American women and settled in the area. Their descendants are known as the Muskrat French. After the Revolutionary War, Michigan became part of the United States. During the War of 1812, Frenchtown was the site of a disastrous American defeat at the hands of British and Native American forces. The Battle of Frenchtown (also known as the Battle of River Raisin) was the largest battle ever to take place on Michigan soil. The conflict involved over 2,000 combatants on both sides. Native Americans from several different tribes banded with the British seeking to stop American encroachment on native lands. The United States lost Fort Detroit early in the war and in 1813, an American contingent under William Henry Harrison and James Winchester were tasked with regaining the fort. On January 22, 1813, British and native forces under British Colonel Henry Proctor launched a surprise attack against Americans camped on the Raisin River near present day Frenchtown. While the Americans, mostly volunteers from Kentucky, fought valiantly they were promptly outflanked and badly routed. 379 Americans were killed, and more than 500 taken prisoner. The British casualties included only 24 dead and 158 wounded. Eventually the war ended in 1815 with neither the British or Americans emerging a clear-cut victor. One loser, however, were the Native Americans who were destined to sign ruinous treaties or be expelled from their land as an outcome of the war.

It is likely that a Frenchtown tutor will keep you caught up on your most demanding academic subjects so you can take time away from the books to enjoy the many things to do in Frenchtown and the surrounding areas. With over 1,300 acres offering a variety of recreational opportunities, Sterling State Park is on the southeastern edge of Frenchtown along Lake Erie. Activities include fishing and boating on the one mile stretch of the lake. The park also features campgrounds and hiking trails. The Sterling-Marsh Trail is six-miles with hiking, biking and cross country skiing. The Sterling-River Raisin Heritage Trail is nearly two miles and has access to historic sites. The trail connects to the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center on the grounds of the 1813 battle.

Frenchtown benefits from its proximity to the many exciting amenities in Toledo. Internationally revered, the Toledo Museum of Art is home to over 30,000 objects including paintings, drawings, sculptures and glass art. In fact, the museum includes the Glass Pavilion dedicated to glass pieces from ancient to modern times. The pavilion itself is a work of art with most walls consisting of curved glass. Masterpieces by renowned artists such as Cezanne, van Gogh, El Greco and Picasso grace the permanent collection of the museum. In 2007, Travel and Leisure magazine gave the museum its Best Design Award.

On the banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, the National Museum of the Great Lakes celebrates the natural wonder and history of the Great Lakes. Opened in 2014, the museum presents visitors with over 350 years of navigation along the lakes and rivers of the area. The museum also has a wide range of physical memorabilia about the history of ships and sailing.
