About Dearborn
We have all heard of Ford cars, and odds are we have owned, currently own, or know someone who owns a Ford. They are one of the largest sellers of vehicles in the United States, and are one of the most common manufacturers to see. You’ve also probably heard of Henry Ford, the man who started it all. Henry Ford believed in hard work and dedication, that if you wanted something you went out and made it happen. He would probably heartily approve of you meeting with your Dearborn tutor for a couple of reasons. One, because it means you are moving forward and making your dreams happen, and two because Dearborn is where Mr. and Mrs. Ford decided to build their last and favorite home.
Henry Ford was the first manufacturer to invent the production line, which made mass producing these large automobiles easier and quicker. He cared about his workers, however, and had a “five dollar a day” pay schedule, the early beginnings of minimum wage for workers. With the introduction of the Model T in 1908, the Ford company took off, and with it Henry Ford’s dreams and visions. He credits much if his success to his wife Clara, who definitely went on to make a name for herself as well.
Clara Ford stuck by her husband dutifully, both could be found commenting on their shared interests and passions. While her husband trail blazed the automobile world, Clara found her niche in social reform projects, focusing on women who had found themselves on hard times.
The Ford’s decided to build a house in Dearborn in the early 1900’s, it would be 15th home they had built together, and was 31,000-square feet big. This home was catered to entertaining the grandchildren as well as one of their favorite guests, Thomas Edison, who had suites dedicated just for him. Their house was complete with a hydro-electric powerhouse and dam, greenhouse, a working farm built all to scale just for their grandchildren to enjoy, indoor pools, staff houses, a bowling alley, a pony barn for the kids, and even a garage and laboratory just for Henry. It was their dream house, and the home that they lived out their days in.
Henry was a firm believer in working hard for what you want. He would applaud anyone who was meeting with their Dearborn tutor and working hard to reach for their goals and see their dreams come alive in front of their eyes.
