The history of Boardman goes back to the late eighteenth century, when this community primarily consisted of small farms, agricultural ventures, and a primarily rural community. Most of the agricultural exports from Boardman consisted of grain as well as some fruit, mainly apples. Boardman began to attract more residents in the 1800s when the railroad arrived, and many families left nearly Youngstown which began to feel crowded to have a quieter life in Boardman. It was also around this time that horse racing became popular in the area, at a local horse racing park called Southern Park. This brought a lot of tourism into the area. Boardman experienced a population boom during the middle of the 1900s when many suburban neighborhood developments began to be constructed as a result of more people leaving the larger nearby cities for a slower, more quiet country life in Boardman.

When it comes to local shopping, Boardman is famous for its local strip mall, which has been around since the middle of the 1900s. This strip mall, the Boardman Plaza strip mall, is famous for two reasons… one, it has great local shops, and two, it’s actually one of the first strip malls to ever be developed in the entire United States! This is the main source of retail shopping not only for Boardman, but also for other nearby communities, including the bigger city of Youngstown.

The local public schools are served by the Boardman Local School District. Boardman students have access to several public elementary schools, a few public middle schools, and one public high school, Boardman High School. These local schools provide Boardman students with a high quality of education, and plentiful educational resources.
