    About Venice

Venice, Florida, boasts one of the highest populations of snowbirds in the United States. Affectionately nicknamed for birds that fly south in the winter, snowbirds tend to be older individuals, of retirement age, who want to spend their winters in a warm climate. Every fall and winter, Venice fills with snowbirds from all over the east coast and Midwest, many of them staying permanently after they experience their first mild Christmas in the tropical climate of Florida. Venice also boasts another kind of bird—hundreds, in fact—housed at the VAAS, also known as the Venice Area Audubon Society.

Like other animal wildlife refuge centers, the VAAS rescues, protects, and rehabilitates a variety of birds at its rookery. One of the differences between the VAAS and other wildlife refuges, however, is that the VAAS is open to the general public for visits and photography. Visitors are invited to be there from sun up to sunset to enjoy the natural landscape and various birdsongs that permeate the air. The rookery provides native vegetation of Florida, maintains the grounds, and allows the birds they house to make lives for themselves. Nesting, feeding, and other activities are undertaken by the rookery’s residents, and alligators patrol the bodies of water to keep mammalian predators at bay. The VAAS has created a biozone specific to house species of birds that allows them to thrive.

The VAAS is part of a larger network of Audubon centers for wildlife. The Audubon Society runs zoos, insectariums, parks, aquariums, other rookeries, and botanical gardens—all in the service of providing the general public with education about plant and wildlife. The VAAS has played a key part in conservation efforts throughout Florida and the rest of the United States. The countless employees who run the VAAS and other Audubon institutions dedicate their time and efforts to providing the public with information about the beauty of the natural world, as well as the importance of protecting it from pollution, encroachment, and other problems.

While tutors at Grade Potential in Venice may not work in the same way the volunteers and employees work at the VAAS, they also provide information and help for students who want to improve their academic skills. They show them the best ways to study, grow, and maintain self-confidence through setbacks. And, just like the volunteers with the VAAS, they are enthusiastic experts in their field, well-equipped to help their clients turn bad grades around and approach the future with renewed drive to succeed.
