In New York, it is hard to think there is a place to live where you can feel isolated from the rest of the bustling city. Windsor Terrace began as farmland owned by John Vanderbilt. The farmland was sold and developed into a quiet neighborhood. Today, it remains a highly desirable place to live for those wanting to get away from city life. After John Vanderbilt’s death, his family sold the farmland to real estate developer William Bell, who developed the land into 47 building lots. Streets and cottages were laid out to make way for more developments. What made this land so desirable? Windsor Terrace was so appealing for its location and close proximity to the Town of Flatbush and Brooklyn. The neighborhoods residents could have the best of both worlds. They could be close enough to the city to work and play but live in Windsor where they could have an escape from the busy city life.

Although, the Windsor Terrace was a rural escape for city folk they were not immune to city growth. By 1862, the village had 30 inhabitants in twelve different houses. At this time more blocks were added to the area. More growth came in the 1870s. Soon the village was complete with a Protestant chapel by 1874 and two years later a public school. Of course, in the Brooklyn area, no one remains rural for long. Around the early 1900s, the village traded a rural feel for row houses to be built throughout its streets. William Calder, a developer at a time, set to build 700 two-story homes along Prospect Park SW. In later years, Calder would end up being elected a U.S. Senator for the New York State. Growth only sped up for the once little village. With the rumor of the neighborhood being served by the New York City Subway, development picked up the pace in 1925. Single and two-family homes were built along with apartment buildings. New residents moved in, many of which were Irish-American workers. Many of these new families would end up staying in the neighborhood for generations.

The New York City Subway never made its way to the Windsor Terrace neighborhood. Instead, the Independent Subway System would begin serving the area in 1933. The neighborhood experienced a lot of growth since its farm days. But, Windsor Terrace still kept its isolated, small-town feel compared to its neighbors. For years, Windsor has spruced up its streets and parks. After adding stylish restaurants and fighting to keep their brick rowhouses, many are fighting to get their own home here. Brick rowhouse is highly sought after in the Brooklyn area and their few streets make a rarely quiet neighborhood. Values of homes have skyrocketed due to the popularity of the area and its uniqueness. Unlike all the large neighborhoods around Windsor Terrace, they have remained the isolated piece of quiet for its many residents.
