It is no doubt that Manhattan is one of America’s most historical areas. The area was one of the first to be founded by European immigrants and before them, Native Americans called the land home. West Village, in particular, was ideal for settlers because of its proximity to the Hudson River. In return for its early colonization, West Village has gained many historical sights, both old and modern. Residents here have made it their duty to preserve as many historical landmarks as possible. Neighborhoods around them were losing their landmarks to modern developments. The people of West Village are still determined to maintain their historical value. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission dedicated more than 50 blocks of West Village as part of a Historic District. This district was indicted in 1969 and was the city’s largest for four decades. However, preservationists advocated for the entire neighborhood to be included instead of excluding blocks closest to the Hudson River.

Today, advocates press on to preserve more of the city’s landmarks. Currently, in West Village, redevelopment in the area is highly restricted. Renovations must preserve the original aesthetics of the buildings before, during and after the renovating. Several non-profit preservation organizations have been started since the 1990s, in response to high pace development. The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation is dedicated to the cultural and architectural heritage of the Greenwich Village. Weehawken Street Historic District protects another territory of West Village. This district was designated in 2006 and includes buildings from 1830 to 1938. Many of the residents were prominent long-term owners like brewer-distillers, lawyers, and former Mayors. The district also includes former stables and a sailor's hotel. Gansevoort Market Historic District protects the Meatpacking District. This was the first new historic district in 34 years and protects their cobblestone streets, warehouses, and rowhouses. In 2007, the entire neighborhood was listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

One of the city’s most remarkable buildings is not only located in Greenwich Village (a portion of West Village) but it is also on the New York City Landmark Preservation Commission's and the Greenwich Village Historic District. The Jefferson Market Branch is now a branch of the New York Public Library but was once known as the Jefferson Market Courthouse. This building was originally intended to be the Third Judicial District Courthouse from 1874-1877. In 1958 it was rescued from demolition and was reused as a branch of the New York public library. West Village residents have made preserving their history a priority for decades. When visitors walk down the streets they can be assured that some kind of history was made there.
