Manhattan’s Upper West Side has brought in many “upper-crust” residents. Known to be one of New York’s wealthiest neighborhoods, it is home to many white collar business and commercial workers. With Columbia University on the north end of the neighborhood, the Upper West Side has grown a reputation as being New York City’s cultural hub. Perhaps high society is attracted to the Upper West Side for its museums and the luxurious architecture that can be found in almost all of the buildings.The now privileged neighborhood was not always home to the rich and wealthy. At one time the Upper West Side was run down and unsafe for those living there especially in the 1960’s. An urban renewal slower developed the area into the high-class society area it is today.

In the early to mid-1900s, south of 67th street was given the name “San Juan Hill”. The area became heavily populated by African-Americans and the nickname was given in commemoration of African-American soldiers who played an important role in the assault on Cuba’s San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. The area became rough and full of tenement housing by the 1960s. Starting in 1962 an urban renewal began. Demolition of the area began and made room for the construction of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Lincoln Towers apartments which completed in 1968. Closer to the heart of the Upper West Side was home to residents of a different background. After World War II the area became a significant Jewish neighborhood. The area became home to German Jews who came to America at the turn of the century and then Jewish refugees who escaped Hitler during WWII. From 85th Street to 100th Street is now home to the largest community of young Modern Orthodox singles other than Israel. Major synagogues are located in the neighborhood, including Shearith Israel, the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. Numerous other synagogues are also in the area including the second and third oldest in the United States.

With the new urban renewal brought many museums and cultural arts. Many of the buildings here are praised not only for what lies inside but the beautiful architecture on the outside. The synagogues and churches of the neighborhood are not only profoundly historical but also loved by many architects. The American Museum of Natural History and New York Historical Society, both noted for their beautiful architecture, also call this neighborhood home. The Beacon Theatre opened in 1929, still, stands as an art deco music hall. Some of ballet’s best can be found performing at the New York City Ballet. Residents and visitors also have the option to hear amazing voices being belted at the Metropolitan Opera. The Upper West Side of Manhattan has been developed into a distinguished area which houses only New York’s most distinguished residents.
