New York has been seen as the epicenter of high fashion and high-class residents in America. Those living in New York can tell you the upper-class residents resided in Upper East Side of New York. It is said that it is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in New York City. The neighborhood has gone down in history not only with fashion trends but its historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The historical buildings in the district include the Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo Mansion and the Sara Delano Roosevelt Memorial House. Among their historical sites, the area has also been nicknamed “Museum Mile”. The Upper East Side is home to some of the most famous museums in the world as well as several esteemed art galleries. It is no wonder the area has been once named the “Millionaires Row” as it has been home to many high-class politicians and other world influences.

Keeping up with the Joneses. A phrase we all know and maybe are a part of. The phrase is said to be referring to the Jones family who was high society in the Upper East Side of New York. Edith Wharton, Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist, short story writer, and designer, was born the name Edith Newbold Jones in 1862. Her family owned plenty of property in New York and spend much of their time traveling. The phrase “keeping with the Joneses” is rumored to refer to her father’s family. She owned blacks bounded by 57th and 58th Streets and Fifth and Madison. The stretch of Fifth Avenue from 50th to 59th Streets, right near Joneses property, was favored by the Vanderbilt family. As the area developed more, fashion forward New Yorkers build mansions and townhouses on large lots facing Central Park. They kept their reputation of being fashionable by building stylish and elegant homes to live in.

Over the years and development of the Upper East side, more and more upper-class families moved in. Majority of these families were highly involved in politics. High-class residents included the famously rich Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick. These new upper crust residents began what they call the Gilded Age. When 1916 came along so did the first apartment house. Apartments were then built to replace private mansions. The apartment buildings did not stop the privileged from moving into the area. Rockefellers, Roosevelts and the infamous Kennedys all held a residency in the Upper East Side. New York began and has remained as one of the most influential cities in the world. Those who have occupied the Upper East Side have ranged from political dynasties to company commodity empires and even to fashion moguls. All of which had a powerful impact on the world.
