About Chantilly
Chantilly is an unincorporated part of Fairfax County Virginia and sits just 25 miles West of the nation's capitol. Like many Southern towns Chantilly has a rich history. It is home to a number of colonial plantations including Leeton Grove, the Hutchison Planation, and the Chantilly plantation. Sully Plantation, now called Sully Historic Site, is a Virginia landmark and a nationally registered historic place. Sully Plantation has been restored and is open to the public for tours. Sully Historic Site includes original outbuildings, representative slave quarter and gardens. Visitors can take guided tours to learn more about the 19th century life of the site's original owners, tenant farmers and enslaved African Americans.
Chantilly is also home to a Civil War battle site with 2 names. Union soldiers called it the Battle of Chantilly. Confederate soldiers called it the Battle of Ox Hill. Today most of the Chantilly/Ox Hill battlefield is covered by modern developments but a small county park preserves a 5-acre portion of the battle site. The park includes trails, signage and interpretive kiosks. Reenactment and living history groups occasionally host events at the park to help interpret events and give visitors a sense of the past. Fairfax County provides an "Ox Hill Battlefield Walking Tour" with an audio script that you can access from the county parks website. The same site offers interpretive audio for each of the 9 signs located throughout the park.
Chantilly is home to more modern history as well including museums dedicated to the history of flight. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, an extension of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, allows visitors to explore aviation and space history. Hundreds of aircraft and spacecraft are on display in two huge hangars. While at the Udvar-Hazy center you can see the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, and the Space Shuttle Discovery. You can observe restoration specialists working on artifacts in the special Restoration Hangar. You can even watch Dulles Airport’s air traffic from the giant observation tower. There are also plenty of hands on exhibits. What a great resource for you and your Chantilly tutor!
If you need a clean, quiet, indoor place to work with your tutor be sure to visit the Chantilly Regional Library.
