Throughout the 18th century, tobacco farming was the primary industry, and Bethesda was a small rural town. The transportation revolution that introduced automobiles and roadways allowed for more suburbanization in modern day Bethesda, and the population saw a notable growth in the mid 1900s.

Bethesda is home to many large corporations and their headquarters, including Lockheed Martin, Marriott International, and Coventry Health Care. These headquarters provide many good jobs to locals in Bethesda. Many residents in Bethesda can also find an easy commute into Washington D.C. for work, and many people with government jobs enjoy coming home to Bethesda each night instead of living in Washington D.C.
